So you've seen my art in the Gallery, from Twitter, or elsewhere and now you'd like to hire me to draw something just for you? Then you've come to the right place! Here you'll find my rates and other information regarding commissions.
<< COMMISSION STATUS: CLOSED >>
I am not currently taking commissions. I'll announce on Twitter (@dachoutom) whenever I open them up again, though I promise no timefrime for when that may be.
You can use the bars below to track the progress of your commission, or as a way to check the workload I currently have which may affect the speed of completion on all requests. Each bar segment represents a different stage of the drawing process (sketching, inking, coloring).
No current commissions!
Original Art Pieces
Prices on original art depend a lot on what you're requesting. Below is a table of some base prices for various types of requests. All prices are per character. Additional characters in the same artwork are discounted to 80% the normal rate. (ex. 2 characters, full body, full color, no BG would be $125: $70 for the first character plus $55 for the second character)
|Head Only ||Bust/Waist ||Full Body ||w/ Simple BG (add) ||w/ Full BG (add)**|
|Sketch ||$15 ||$20 ||$30 ||N/A ||varies|
|Lineart ||$17 ||$23 ||$35 ||N/A ||varies|
|Solid Color ||$20 ||$27 ||$40 ||$2 ||varies|
|Full Color ||$30 ||$45 ||$70 ||$3 ||varies|
Sketch - A rough sketch where I haven't cleaned things up to make smoother lines, etc.
Lineart - I'll trace over the rough sketch on a new layer in Photoshop to make smooth lines and clean up rough edges for a crisp final product, but without any coloring. Some refer to this as 'inking'.
Solid Color - A basic coloring of the lineart with minimal to no shading. Price assumes I've cleaned up the lineart, though if you like the rough style I can leave the lines as a sketch.
Full Color - Add full shading to the solid base colors to complete the picture. This is where the most time is spent working on a piece, so it represents a significant price jump in the tiers. As with solid color, the lineart will be inked unless you want the style/look of rough sketch lines. I also will usually color the lines themselves: as with inking, you may opt for the plain black lines if that's the look you'd rather have.
Head Only - Showcases your character's face and hair. The only clothing visible would be a hat or a small bit around the neck.
Bust/Waist - Extends down past the head to include the chest (i.e. waist and up), and therefore some of the clothing the character is wearing.
Full Body - Anything beyond the Bust level, this will include your character's legs and feet.
Simple BG - Normally I'll just leave a white/transparent background, but I can add a simple splash of color/pattern behind your character or for example small tufts of grass at their feet if you want. This really only applies for colored works.
Full BG - Not just your character, but your character in a full-on scene such as a landscape or in a building. Companions such as animals/monsters would also be lumped into this category, even though they're not strictly background objects. Depending on the request, this can add considerable effort/expense: the exact price will depend on exactly what you want as some backgrounds are more intricate than others.
Note that some gear designs in FFXIV are incredibly complex, and may warrant a small additional fee on top of the base prices listed above: if that should be the case I would let you know before beginning work on your commission.
$5 / name
$3 / name in combination with art or screenshot edit
In addition to drawing characters, I also like to play with the Eorzean script of FFXIV. I'd be happy to write your character's name in Eorzean in the style of your choosing (think of it like how your character would sign their own name on a check or in a ledger). Some examples of what I mean can be seen below, or on my Eorzean fonts page. The fonts page is also a great place to familiarize yourself with the Eorzean script if you've never noticed or heard of it before. If you're already commissioning an art piece or screenshot edit, consider adding on your character's name to the package too!
$20 / screenshot
FFXIV is already an amazing looking game, but editing screenshots in Photoshop can still make them look even nicer by adding depth of field, extra lighting effects, smoothing polygon edges, cropping the scene, playing with saturation and contrast, drawing in extra strands of hair, and so on. You provide your favorite screenshot and I'll see what I can do to make you love it even more!
For examples you can look at the screenshots category in the gallery. Right now these are just the final products, but I may look into a way to smoothly display before/after pairs in the future as time permits.
What You Get
The final product delivered to you will be a PNG image at the original resolution I drew it at while I will retain the original PSD file. For art, this is typically in the 3000-6000 pixel range in the long dimension depending on if it's a head shot or full body shot. The full resolution image will be provided exclusively to you via a private Dropbox link which I will leave active for 1 month after notifying you your commission is complete, so please save it to your hard drive. Reduced resolution versions may be added to the gallery and posted to my Twitter at my discretion, but only you will have the full resolution version unless you share it yourself. Since the Dropbox link will eventually be removed, please upload the image yourself elsewhere to share it, giving proper credit to me as the artist.
Character signatures will also be provided as a high resolution PNG of black lettering on a transparent background, suitable for resizing and adding effects for easy inclusion in other images (e.g. a forum signature). Note that I am only writing your character's name as shown in the examples, not making full forum signature images.
Screenshot edits will be at the resolution of the original file you provide to me or slightly smaller if cropped. I can't magically add detail where there wasn't any to begin with just by enlarging the image.
How to Order
Send an email detailing your request to commissions -at- dachoutom -dot- org. Please include the following information:
Original Art Pieces
**I do NOT do nudes/18+ commissions. I only mean this for if you are ordering a bust/full body artwork, or a headshot with a hat or any jewelry/accessories.
- Type of art requested from the table above (e.g. full color, head only, simple BG)
- Desired pose/expression of your character(s)
- If applicable: the clothing/gear you want your character(s) wearing**
- Screenshots of your character(s), preferably multiple shots from various angles and in the gear you want them drawn in so I can include all the various details of your character(s) and their clothing
- Your character's name, for the progress bars at the top of this page.
- Anything else more specific about your request. The more you can tell me about what you want, the better.
- If you're a Twitter user, feel free to include your Twitter name so I can throw you a mention when I post the finished work!
- Your character's name, so I know what to write (including any non-official alterations like accented letters or ligatures)
- The style you'd like it written in (this can be a description like 'elegant and flowing' or 'sloppy and rushed/poor penmanship', or even better an example image or font that I could adapt from standard Latin glyphs into Eorzean ones, etc.: see the examples above)
- The image file of your original screenshot, obviously
- Optional: If you have something in particular in mind, a description of what you'd like me to edit about it or draw focus to in the scene. Otherwise I'll come up with something on my own to beautify it.
Making Your Payment and Beyond
Once I have your request, I will begin work after receiving your payment. Payment can be made through PayPal: I'll send you a PayPal invoice to the email you originally messaged me with detailing the total cost.
It may take several days or even weeks for me to complete your request depending on its complexity and how busy I am with other tasks, but I will make every effort to complete it swiftly without compromising quality. I will do my best to update you on the progress of your commission via the limit break bars at the top of the page, but if you don't hear anything or see a change in the bar for a while you are always free to send another email to me asking for a progress report. If you'd rather I don't post your name on the site as having ordered a commission for any reason (say, perhaps as a gift for someone and you don't want them to know), let me know when you place your order.
In all cases, once I finish the sketch phase I will send you a small preview of the progress so far as a check to see if it meets your approval. If there are any small alterations you'd like made to the drawing (like say the facial expression isn't quite right), this is the time to point them out before I start inking and coloring things, as it becomes much more difficult to make changes once I start those later phases.
A Note on Prices
I do realize that—for some—my prices may be considered on the higher side of things compared to others and I briefly want to address that here.
I have chosen these prices for what I believe is commensurate to the amount of time and effort that is involved in fulfilling them. It is my opinion that artistic ventures are often sorely undervalued not just by clients but by the artists that create them as well. Could another, better, artist produce similar quality work as I do but in less time? Probably, and you could justify both that they could charge less because they can do it quicker, or that they could charge more because they've invested more time in honing their skills to reach a higher level of ability. If you think another artist produces work in a style that you prefer more than mine and at a cheaper price, by all means go commission them instead: it's not going to hurt my feelings. In the end, when you commission me, it's because you enjoy my style over others or for whatever other reason prefer that I be the artist and have decided that the prices I am asking for are of a personally reasonably value and worth the investment to you.
I fully recognize that this may lead to a lower volume of requests, but I can do so comforted by the knowledge of being fairly compensated when I do take on a project and so it is a tradeoff I am willing to make.
